motorcycle travel

Just about every year since I started riding, my regular riding group and I would make a trip or two for some great riding along the scenic roads through out the state of Vermont. On one particular trip the plan was to head ride up Friday night and ride around till Sunday morning and head back home.

We planned out the route and made our arraignments but the forecast had change rather quickly and a mild hurricane was making its way to eastern Massachusetts. We decided we'd make the trip anyways the storm came in a few hours before we planned on leaving around 8PM so the trip started in the rain.

We rode 3 hours through some consistent heavy rain to a 99 restaurant near a gas station where we stopped for a burger and a beer, we were both very pleased with how dry we were. Not really a drop of water anywhere except for the bottoms of my pant legs, since I forgot to tuck them in before taking off

After dinner we continued on through the rain for another hour and arrive at the camper, exceptionally dry once again, laid out our gear and settled down to rest.

The following morning we woke to 2 days of clear blue skies and clean dry road conditions and great riding while it was pouring back home.

Loaded up on a small ferry VT to NY across Lake Champlain.

Taking route 125 VT (one of my favorites) to a ferry in New York up the coast of Lake Champlain and almost up to the Canadian boarder.

motorcycle adventure

Back in northern Vermont after crossing the Korean War Veteran's Memorial Bridge.

We crossed Lake Champlain again via the Korean War Veteran Memorial bridge and enjoyed the rural farm roads in the area which reminded me of a section of Wisconsin from a different trip years ago.

After a great day of riding and a cool ferry ride, with some cool Canadians on their own motorcycle adventure, we crashed in Burlington, VT to wake again to another sunny day of great riding. We hoped on route 100 South (another great road, another favorite) all the way through VT to Route 2 east in Massachusetts and headed home.

This was a great weekend, in over 10 years of riding this was probably in my top ten rides and it probably would've been canceled had both of us not had quality motorcycle rain gear for the first leg of the trip.

It took us several years before we understood the real value of rain gear for motorcycle riding, and after riding through short burst of rain to full on hurricanes without for year over the years.  Having it now I can tell you with that it is absolutely worth the investment (if you ride in the rain)

If you've had to deal with a wet leather jacket on a trip you know why this matters. Not only that but once your wet on a motorcycle, your going to get cold, and when you finish your ride you are going to be exhausted.

Rain gear fixes that, good rain gear made for motorcycles fixes that. A rain jacket from the outdoor outlet isn't going to save from the onslaught of rain at highway speeds, your going to be soaked wearing ribbons, trust me.

It really does make a world of difference, as long as you are  comfortable and capable of handling your bike in adverse conditions, good rain gear makes riding through the storm not really a big deal at all.
